CII lines up 131 projects worth over $10 billion for India-Africa conclave news

The India-Africa conclave, being held in New Delhi from 19-21 March, will discuss 131 projects worth over $10 billion, CII said in a release.

The conference is expected to highlight Africa's potential as an investment venue and increase economic cooperation between India and the nations of the African continent.

The largest ever conclave of African nations in India, 'The India Africa Project Partnership 2008' will focus on four main areas of technology, agriculture, human resources and energy.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the EXIM Bank and the ministries of commerce and industry and external affairs are jointly organising the conference.

About 925 delegates from 37 African countries, including the vice presidents of Tanzania and Ghana, are expected to participate in the conclave.

The conference will enable Indian investors to interact with key people from over 35 African countries, the CII release said.

Africa is already a major trade partner of India. Nigeria is India's second largest source of imported crude petroleum, accounting for 12.2 per cent of India's global imports in 2006-07. South Africa is the fourth-largest source for India's gold imports while Morocco, Senegal and South Africa are leading sources of India's global imports of inorganic chemicals.

FDI inflows to India from African countries between August 1991 and March 2007 topped $18 billion.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Syamal Gupta, chairman of CII Africa Committee and chairman of Tata International, pointed out that Africa has a landmass that is 11 times the size of India, which is an indication of the size of the opportunities in that continent. He said the Tata Group was involved in Africa since 1976, in various areas such as transport, information technology, hotels, mining and telecom.

Likewise, Kirloskar Brothers has a presence in more than 25 African countries, which highlighted India's potential role in providing ''affordable, adaptable, appropriate technology'' to Africa, said Sanjay Kirloskar, the company's CMD and co-chairman, CII Africa Committee. "Africa is the success story waiting to happen and one which will soon happen," he added.

''Many African countries are growing at double digits, such as Ethiopia. Africa is striving to close the chapter of poverty,"

Gannet Zewide, Ethiopian ambassador to India, pointed out.

''The process of involvement of Indian entrepreneurs to Africa is well timed, as Africa has a lot of potential now,'' said John Bentum Williams, high commissioner of Ghana to India.

Nimisha Madhwani, the Ugandan Ambassador to India, said contrary to the negative image of Africa portrayed in the media, "Africa is a safe investment destination", adding, "only 10 per cent of Africa is developed in spite of its large size think of the opportunities."

Tarun Das, chief mentor, CII, said the core of the India-Africa relationship was the 'people-to-people' relationship. He spoke of the common histories and common challenges faced by India in Africa - to eliminate poverty by building and empowering people, in building infrastructure and connectivity and through low-cost, appropriate technology.

Home Loans - UCO Bank may reduce interest rate on home loans by 0.50%

Uco Bank may reduce interest rate on home loans by 0.50% - ET

UCO Bank said on Friday it may cut home loan rates by 50 basis points. The state-owned bank is scheduled to take a final decision on the proposal at a board meeting on March 15. It is not clear whether lower rates will be offered for home loans under Rs 20 lakh. The government had said that it is in favour of lower interest rates for home loans under Rs 20 lakh to meet demand. These loans constitute 80% of the advances classified under priority sector. "We have already cut down home loan rates by 50 basis points and may further cut down the rates by another 50 basis oints," Uco bank chairman and managing director S K Goel said. On raising capital, Mr Goel said the bank would take a view only when market stabilises. If markets do not stabilise till June, the bank would raise about Rs 250 crore through qualified institutional placement, he said. Smaller loans have less risk weight than those above Rs 20 lakh and, therefore, bankers have incentives to lend to these borrowers at lower interest rates. Several banks, including SBI, Canara Bank, Allahabad Bank and HDFC, have reduced lending rates by 25-50 basis points. The largest private bank, ICICI Bank, has said there could be softening of rates in the first quarter of the next fiscal. SBI charges 10%- 11.5% for loans up to Rs 20 lakh. Mr Chidambaram's recent call for softer interest rates could mean further lowering of interest rates in the home loan segment.

Sex too hard to sell these days in Hamburg

Hamburg: The oldest bordello in Hamburg's red-light district is shutting down for lack of business, according to newspaper reports published on Friday.

The family-run Hotel Luxor, established in 1948, is being sold to an investor and will close down for good next month, madam Waltraud Mehrer said, according to the Hamburg Morgenpost and Bild newspapers.

She blamed the decline in business on easily available Internet porn, the rise of call girl services, and "noisy discos and dance clubs" on the same street as her business, the newspapers reported.

"You can't make any big money selling sex in St Pauli any more," she was quoted as saying, referring to the area that includes the red-light district. "The only thing still in operation are the table dance clubs."

The club's heyday was in the 1970s, when it was open 7 days a week, with 12 prostitutes on hand.

"Our customers were well off, they didn't scrimp," she said. "That's also changed today."

Hotel Luxor today employs four prostitutes, and is only open Tuesday through Friday nights.

"Two thousand euros (US$3,080) per night — it was like that once," one of the women, who gave her name only as "Nicole," told the Morgenpost. "Now I can only dream of that. I've been here a year and only earn around 200 euros (US$308) per shift."

Man wins true love by texting on a wrong number

London: An English man named Anthony Hubbocks would have never thought that he would find true love, when he sent a flirty text message to a wrong number.

But it seems that their alliance was made in heaven, for the message was received by Michelle Morris who mistakenly thought it to be from a male friend of her own, and instantly sent a cheeky reply.

Later when the duo talked on phone, they discovered that Hubbocks' text from Tyneside had reached Morris' mobile in the Welsh valleys.

However, the duo got along so well that dad-of-two Anthony, 29, an electrician from Gateshead soon moved down into her home in Cym, Ebbw Vale, with her two kids Darcee, 3, and Levi, 8.

And the couple is now engaged to say 'I Do'.

"I sent a message to a lass I know. It got to Wales, though – where Michelle thought it was from a pal of hers," Mirror quoted Anthony, as saying.

Michelle, 33, a catering manager, laughingly said: "We exchanged photos and when I asked him if I could visit, he almost choked on his toothbrush. But I had been having a really hard week at work and my friends all told me to just go for it."

New Yorker 'didn't intend' theft in bank error

New York: A defence attorney in New York City says her client believed he was rightfully entitled to the $2 million he's accused of stealing from a bank account managed by someone with the same name.

Attorney Julie Fry says Benjamin Lovell "didn't intend to steal from anyone." She says he'll explain in court what the bank told him that led him to believe the $5.8 million account was his.

The 48-year-old Brooklyn salesman has been arrested on grand larceny charges. A judge lowered his bail Friday from $1 million to $10,000 in cash.

Authorities say Lovell spent the misbegotten money on jewellery, cash gifts to friends and failed investments.

The account belonged to a trust, and a different Benjamin Lovell was a signatory on it.

'Fat tax' proposed for obese in Britain

London: Being overweight will cost you more than just your health, for insurance firms in Britain are going to levy a 'fat tax' on the seriously obese.

Costs for the seriously overweight could be 50 per cent higher on new premiums, and the threshold at which the higher rate starts will be lowered.

The country's biggest life insurer, Legal & General, confirmed that 13 per cent of new applicants face paying the higher premiums, which apply to anyone with a body mass index of 30 or higher, the point at which people are declared medically obese.

The increased charge can be up to 400 per cent if you fall into other high-risk categories, such as being a smoker or having previous medical conditions.

"Most people understand that poor diet and lack of exercise can lead to health problems but they might not realise that being significantly overweight would also make their life insurance more expensive," the Scotsman quoted Russ Whitworth, Legal & General's director of underwriting and claims, as saying.

"Although it is not an exact science, we find that BMI is the best indicator of the risk of being overweight, so it pays to stay in shape," Whitworth added.

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers said: "If you are obese, you are at greater risk of contracting certain diseases. It is just the same as increasing the premium for a smoker or somebody with previous medical conditions."

Woman mayor poses in underwear, loses job

Arlington: The mayor of an Oregon town who once stripped to her underwear and posed on a fire truck has been stripped of her office.

Voters in this town of about 500 voted narrowly on Monday to recall Carmen Kontur-Gronquist. The tally was 142-139. City officials said the recall is effective from Tuesday.

Kontur-Gronquist said the pictures of her in black bra and panties were taken for use in a contest about fitness, but a relative posted them on MySpace in hopes it would improve the social life of the single mother.

They predated her election, but she said she saw no reason to take them off the popular Web site once elected three years ago. Later, she closed access to them.

Opponents said it wasn't fitting for the mayor to be so depicted. They said they also disagreed with her on issues about water and the local golf course.

RICHARD GERE CLEARED ON ‘OBSCENE’ KISS

Richard Gere was finally cleared of obscenity yesterday for kissing Britain's Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty. Almost a year after a warrant was issued for the Hollywood star's arrest, it has been stayed by India's Supreme Court. Two judges said the Hindu activists who launched the case were "bringing a bad name to India".

Gere, 58, was accused of offending morality when he grabbed Bollywood star Shilpa, 32, at an anti-AIDS rally in New Delhi.

He bent her over and kissed her several times on the cheek.

Buddhist Gere has apologised for any offence he caused.

He is a frequent visitor to India, campaigning over the plight of Tibetan refugees there.

"Horton Hears a Who!" a hit at box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Move over, Dumbo. Horton is now the big elephant in the room.

The computer-animated adaptation "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who!" trampled its rivals at the North American box office on Sunday with weekend sales of $45.1 million, the biggest opening of the year.

The $85 million 20th Century Fox release, which boasts the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, exceeded industry expectations but fell short of the $55.1 million bow of Carrey's previous turn in a Seuss movie, 2000's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

It does rank as Carrey's best start since May 2003, when "Bruce Almighty" set a new watermark for the Canadian actor with a $67.95 million opening. Overall, "Horton" stands at No. 4 on Carrey's all-time list.

Carrey voices the title character, a rubbery elephant who stumbles upon a speck that happens to be a tiny planet, home to a city called Who-ville. Carell voices the excitable mayor. In a rare moment of synchronicity with moviegoers, critics were also enthusiastic about the film.

Fox, a unit of News Corp, said "Horton" ranks as the fifth-biggest G-rated opening ever; the top honor is held by 2003's "Finding Nemo" with $70.2 million. The studio expected Easter school vacations to boost the film's midweek performance.

Last weekend's champion, "10,000 BC," slipped to No. 2 with $16.4 million for the three-day period; the 10-day haul for Warner Bros. Pictures' prehistoric epic stands at $61.2 million. The critically maligned saga has also earned $73 million internationally. The Time Warner Inc unit said the film cost more than $100 million to make.

Opening at No. 3 was "Never Back Down," a mixed martial arts movie targeted at male youngsters. It earned $8.6 million. The $20 million film is the debut production of privately held Summit Entertainment LLC.

Rounding out the top five were the Walt Disney Co Martin Lawrence comedy "College Road Trip" at No. 4 with $7.9 million, and the Sony Corp political thriller "Vantage Point" at No. 5 with $5.4 million. Their respective totals rose to $24.3 million after two weeks, and $59.2 million after four weeks.

The top-10 contained one other new release, the action thriller "Doomsday," which opened at No. 7 with a disappointing $4.7 million. The $19 million Rogue Pictures production was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal Inc.

John McCain in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain arrived in Iraq on Sunday to assess the success of a U.S. troop build-up that he has strongly backed, part of a week-long trip to the Middle East and Europe.

He is scheduled to meet Iraqi leaders and U.S. military officials, said U.S. embassy spokeswoman Mirembe Nantongo. He is visiting as a member of a fact-finding mission for the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee.

McCain, who will be the Republican choice in November's presidential election, and Senate allies Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham will also visit Israel, Britain and France.

Analysts see the trip as a chance for McCain to show off his knowledge of foreign policy and military affairs while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama fight out a bitter Democratic nomination process at home.

While acknowledging that leaders like British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy might see the trip as a chance to size him up as a potential president, McCain has said he is not traveling as a candidate.

The visit is his eighth to Iraq since U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq in March 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.

McCain, a former Navy pilot and Vietnam War hero, supported going to war but was a vocal critic of how the war was conducted until an extra 30,000 troops were deployed last year as part of a new counter-insurgency strategy.

His political standing has risen and fallen to some degree depending on whether the war has been going well or badly.

McCain said last week that the quickest way to bring the war to a conclusion was by "continuing the surge". Obama and Clinton favor bringing home U.S. troops as soon as possible.

On his last visit in April 2007, McCain made an embarrassing gaffe, saying after a heavily protected visit to a Baghdad market that the American people were not being told the "good news" about the war in Iraq.

Iraq was still gripped by widespread sectarian violence at the time and the area he had been visiting was very dangerous. McCain later admitted he had misspoken in his upbeat assessment.

RECONCILIATION CONFERENCE

Attacks across Iraq have fallen by 60 percent since last June, when the troop build-up was completed. There has been a spike in violence since January, with an upsurge in suicide bombings linked to al Qaeda.

The U.S. military says most of the suicide bombers tend to be foreign fighters.

Citing a case study of 48 foreign fighters captured in Iraq in the last four months, U.S. military spokesman Rear Admiral Greg Smith said on Sunday:

"They tend to be a single male. The average age is 22. Most of these men have no military experience. They primarily (draw) a low wage income. They are taxi drivers and construction workers... Most of these terrorists were from large families who found it hard to be noticed."

Overall levels of violence are down, which U.S. commanders attribute to the extra troops, the growth of mainly Sunni Arab anti-al Qaeda neighborhood patrols, and a ceasefire called by Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr for his Mehdi Army militia.

Washington has been urging Baghdad to take advantage of the improved security to press ahead with political measures aimed at reconciling majority Shi'ite and minority Sunni Muslims.

While some progress has been made on key laws, the Shi'ite-led government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki remains deadlocked on others like a revenue-sharing oil law for Iraq's reserves of crude, the world's third largest.

Late on Saturday Maliki announced that a national reconciliation conference would be held this week. Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said political parties and tribal and religious leaders would take part in the two-day gathering.

Kurds in the northern Iraqi town of Halabja meanwhile held somber ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary of a poison gas attack by Saddam Hussein's forces in 1988 that killed 5,000 people, an incident which achieved world-wide notoriety.
